How Old to Start Driving Lessons in Alberta: A Parent's Guide

Your teen can get a Class 7 learner's licence at 14, and in-car lessons can start as soon as it is in hand.

Parents ask us how old to start driving lessons, and in Alberta the answer starts at 14. That is the age for a Class 7 learner's licence, the card many parents call a learner's permit. In-car lessons can begin once that licence is in your teen's hand.

How old do you have to be to start driving lessons in Alberta?

Alberta's official steps to a licence name three ages.

  • 14: apply for a Class 7 learner's licence, with parental or guardian consent under 18.
  • 16: take the Class 5 road test, after at least 12 months on the Class 7.
  • 18: leave the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program with a full Class 5 licence.

So when can you start driving in Alberta? At 14, with a Class 7 and a supervising driver beside you. Sixteen is the road test age, not the start.

What a teen under 18 needs to get a Class 7

Three things need sorting before the registry visit.

Parental or guardian consent

Alberta asks for parental or guardian consent under 18 for the Class 7 and again for the Class 5 road test. Its Class 5 page calls it written consent, so ask your registry agent how they take it.

Acceptable ID for the registry

The registry must be satisfied that your teen may legally be in Canada and lives in Alberta. Alberta's ID page gives these examples:

  • Proof of legal status in Canada: a Canadian birth certificate, a Canadian passport or a Permanent Resident card.
  • Photo identity: a Canadian passport or a valid Permanent Resident card.
  • Proof of an Alberta address: a utility bill or a bank or credit card statement, dated within the last 90 days.

Debit cards, credit cards and Social Insurance Number cards are not accepted. Many 14-year-olds hold few of these in their own name, so ask the registry agent what they accept.

The knowledge test and vision test

The Class 7 knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions, with 25 needed to pass. It can be taken once per day, with a fee each time. After a pass and a vision test, your teen buys the licence card, which should arrive within 21 business days. A 30-day temporary licence covers the wait.

Our Class 7 Learner Preparation course, $150 plus 5% GST, prepares your teen for the knowledge test in class with an instructor.

When can the first in-car lesson happen?

In a lesson your teen drives and our instructor is the supervising driver, so every in-car lesson needs the Class 7. What age can you start your driving lessons, then? Once the Class 7 is in hand. Do not book the first lesson for the day of the knowledge test, in case it needs a second try. Book a lesson for the week after.

Class 7 rules on every drive

Alberta learners keep these rules on every drive.

  1. A supervising driver over 18 with a full Class 5 licence sits in the front passenger seat.
  2. No driving between 12:00 am and 5:00 am.
  3. 0% alcohol when driving.
  4. No more people in the car than there are seat belts.
  5. Alberta allows 8 demerit points before a licence suspension.

A GDL driver cannot supervise a learner, so a sibling still on a Class 5-GDL cannot sit beside your teen.

When your teen can take the Class 5 road test

The teen must be 16 or older and have held the Class 7 for at least 12 months. Under 18, written consent is needed again. Class 5 road tests are booked through a registry agent.

Do the math with your teen's birthday. A Class 7 issued before the 15th birthday allows a road test on the 16th birthday. A later Class 7 means a 12-month wait, so the start date sets the test date.

A pass brings a Class 5-GDL licence and 24 months of probation. The full Class 5 follows at 18, after the 24 months, with no suspension or demerits in the last 12.

How the Full Course fits the school year

Knowing how old to start driving lessons is half the plan. The other half is the calendar. Our Full Course has 15 hours of theory and 10 in the car, the hours Alberta lists for Class 5 driver training. One plan for a teen who turns 14 in the summer:

  • Summer at 14. Study the driver's guide, pass the knowledge test and get the Class 7.
  • September to December. The 15 hours of theory, in class or at home with the Full Course Online version.
  • January to June. The 10 in-car hours, after school or on weekends, with real winter practice beside an instructor.
  • Age 15 to 16. Family practice with a parent beside them, then the road test at 16.

A teen who starts at 15 can do both parts in one school year and test the next summer.

Pickup and drop-off are free for in-car lessons inside our service areas: Edmonton South, Beaumont, Edmonton Downtown, Edmonton North and Sherwood Park. Ask your insurer how a teen driver and a driving course affect your policy.
