Are there online theory courses for driver education in Alberta? Yes. At City Driving School in Edmonton, every version of the Full Course comes in an online format. The theory is the part that moves online. The driving stays in the car, with an instructor beside you. This post explains what changes, what stays the same, and what each online version costs in your zone.

What moves online, and what never does

Every version of the Full Course has two parts. Only one of them can go online.

• Theory, 15 hours. In class or online. You choose when you book.
• In the car, 10, 15 or 18 hours. Always in person, in the school car, with an instructor beside you.

The theory: 15 hours, online or in class

Online theory courses cover the same 15 hours as our classroom sessions. You work through them from home instead of coming to a classroom. The theory does not shrink online, and you skip the trip, which suits students and busy workers. This is the part people mean when they search for an online driving school.

The in-car hours: always in the car

The in-car hours never move online. Nobody learns to merge, park or read a busy Edmonton intersection on a screen. Here is what stays the same in every version.

• The lessons are in the school car. You do not need a car of your own.
• An instructor sits beside you. Every instructor is certified by Alberta Transportation, and we have men and women on the team.
• Pickup and drop-off are free inside our service areas. The lesson starts and ends at your door.
• You choose the hours. 10 in the Full Course, 15 in the Extended Full Course, 18 in Full Course Value For Money.
• Bring your Class 7 licence to every lesson. Without it, the booked hours are lost.

So, can you take driving school online? Partly. You cannot take driving lessons online with us, but you can take the theory online. With us, online drivers training means the theory online and the driving in the car.

The three online versions and their zone prices

Each online version is a Full Course with the theory online. The in-car hours and your zone set the price. You pick your area when you book, and the zone follows.

• Zone A: Edmonton South and Beaumont.
• Zone B: Edmonton Downtown and Edmonton North.
• Zone C: Sherwood Park.

All prices are plus 5% GST. Every price includes the 15 hours of online theory, the in-car hours, the school car and free pickup inside our service areas. The in-class versions of the same three courses cost $50 to $100 less, depending on the version and your zone. Not sure which zone you are in? How to choose in two questions

You do not need to compare every line. Two questions settle it.

How much practice do you get outside lessons?

• None or very little. Pick 18 hours, the Full Course Value For Money Online.
• Some, but not every week. Pick 15 hours, the Extended Full Course Online.
• Regular practice in a family car. Pick 10 hours, the Full Course Online.

Where do you want to learn the theory?

• At home. Pick one of the online theory courses.
• In a room with an instructor to ask. Pick the in-class version of the same course.

How to book your online theory course

Booking takes five short steps on our booking page. Have your Class 7 licence with you before you start.

1. Your details. Enter your name, email, phone, address, gender and Class 7 licence number.
2. Pick your area. Choose Edmonton South, Beaumont, Edmonton Downtown, Edmonton North or Sherwood Park. This sets your price zone.
3. Pick your course. Choose Full Course Online, Extended Full Course Online or Full Course Value For Money Online. The price for your zone shows next to each course.
4. Pay. Pay online by PayPal, or choose to pay at the office. If you pay at the office, your booking shows payment pending until you do.
5. Agree to the terms. Tick one box and send. A confirmation email arrives at the address you entered.

Two rules to know before you pay. Give 24 hours notice to cancel a lesson, or a $100 charge applies. There is no refund once training starts, so pick your in-car hours with care.

City Driving School offers online theory courses in every version of the Full Course. Full Course Online is $595, $645 or $700 by zone, plus 5% GST, with 10 hours in the car.
